A better responsiveness metric

Chrome’s mission with the Web Vitals program is to help developers focus on the metrics that are essential to great user experiences—the Core Web Vitals. One important aspect of the user experience that we’ve been focusing on is responsiveness, which is the ability of a web page to react quickly to user interactions.

First Input Delay (FID) is the Core Web Vital metric that measures responsiveness, but as we’ve written in the past, there are known limitations of FID. This led us to explore and seek feedback on a (then) experimental metric that addresses these limitations more effectively. In 2022, we announced Interaction to Next Paint (INP) as that new metric, made it widely available in our tools, and started working with the community to test its efficacy.

• Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) : Largest Content Content Load Speed:

Measures the loading performance of the content. To ensure user experience, the LCP should be within 2.5 seconds of the page loading time.

• First Input Delay (FID) : Waiting time before the first interaction with content:

Measures interactivity. To ensure user experience, the FID for pages should not exceed 100 milliseconds.

• Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) : Cumulative Layout Shift:

Measures visual stability. The CLS value should not exceed 0.1 to ensure user experience.

Tools for measuring Core Web Vitals in the field

Chrome’s mission with the Web Vitals program is to help developers focus on the metrics that are essential to great user experiences—the Core Web Vitals. One important aspect of the user experience that we’ve been focusing on is responsiveness, which is the ability of a web page to react quickly to user interactions.

The Chrome User Experience Report collects anonymous, real-world user data for every Core Web Vital metric. This data enables site owners to quickly assess page performance by eliminating manual gathering of analytics and enabling powerful tools such as PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console.

Other Web Vitals metrics

While Core Web Vitals metrics are critical to understanding and ensuring good user interaction, there are other important metrics. They often serve as intermediate or supplemental metrics for Core Web Vitals, and help to more fully capture user interaction or diagnose a specific problem.

Similarly, metrics such as Total Blocking Time (TBT) : Total Blocking Time and Time to Interactive (TTI) : Time to Interactivity, are extremely important lab metrics for identifying and diagnosing potential interactivity issues that could affect FID. However, they are not part of the Core Web Vitals suite because they are not measurable in the field and do not reflect user-centric results.
